Great “find” of the day: Ariel Atom made by Aerial Motor Company. It embodies the best of the world of motorcycles and the world of race cars. One paragraph quoted from wikipedia is more than sufficient to convince one of how extraordinary this car is.
The Ariel Atom is a high performance sports car made by the Ariel Motor Company based in Somerset, England and under license also by Brammo Motorsports in the United States. It is unusual in the respect that it is exoskeletal (the chassis is the body), and therefore lacks a roof, windows and other features commonly found on road cars. It is available with a range of engines; the top of the range being a supercharged Honda Civic Type-R K20 engine and a Supercharged 2.0 Litre 300hp 250 ft·lbf GM Ecotec engine both of which can reach speeds rivaling those of much more expensive automobiles. Although the top speed of approximately 140-150 mph is relatively tame compared to more exotic sports cars, the high power-to-weight ratio (approximately 500 bhp/ton, or 650 bhp/ton supercharged) affords it incredible acceleration and control through corners because there is no large amount of weight to throw it out of the turn.
- 0-60 mph : 2.7 seconds
- Top Speed: 140 mph, 225 km/h (155 mph, 249Km/h Supercharged)
- Power: 220 bhp (300 bhp Supercharged)
- Weight: 456 kg (1,005 lb)
- Transmission: Honda 6-Speed with Reverse
- Price: ~$55,000 (You can build your own on Atom’s website.)
Watch the Top Gear video to see how the driver’s face is distorted because it can go so fast. It has no over-steering, no under-steering. “Drives like a car is supposed to behave…. a driving nirvana.” And did I hear it’s faster than a Carrera GT and only slower than an Enzo?! It IS fast!! With the wind in your face. At a much more affordable price. Now this makes driving more than getting from point A to point B.
I’m so excited about this car beyond words because I’ve always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. But in the past couple of months, everyone has been telling me that I’ll very likely kill myself. The Atom is the perfect solution!
In a phone conversation about cars and racing with Pierre, we started talking about something like the Atom. Someone had shown the Atom to me many years ago and I have seen it in the street recently. I must thank Pierre for reconnecting me to it again. Now I truly believe that if I want to know something, life will reveal the answers to me.
